Week 7 – Best Friend

October 26th, 2009

Finally, a relatively easy week writing! So to make it a little challenging, we did something different. Can you hear what it is??

Eleanor McHenry lived on my block
We sat in the same class and we talked a lot
After school we raced home really fast
Picked out our favorite games, Eleanor always chose last

She was the best friend I ever had
And that’s saying a lot

We started junior high she fell behind
Teachers said she was smart but just didn’t apply
I wrote for the paper, went out for track
Elly made new friends and never looked back

She was the best friend I ever lost
And that’s saying a lot

We got to high school El learned to smoke
Wore too much eyeliner, cursed when she spoke
There were rumors about drinking and going too far with boys
I turned my head and block out the noise

She was the best friend I ever left
And that’s saying a lot

A week before I left home Eleanor crashed
There were things going on at home that made her act rash
She never told anyone never reached out for help
Bottled it up inside kept it all to her self

She was the best friend I ever lost
And that’s saying a lot

Week 6: The Highway Calls

October 21st, 2009

For the record, we finished this at our Tuesday dealine. But it was a little late to record in our apartment. (we like our neighbors) It was a challenging week for writing. If you understand this song, sorry.

Is it my imagination
Or did we cross a line
Somewhere west of Georgia into central time

Did we gain an hour
Following the sun
No I feel tired before the day is done

The highway calls
So we roll on

Cross the Mississippi
An unfamiliar sight
Water flowing south and river growing wide

The plains go on for miles
See the mountains far away
We think we can’t reach them for ten thousand days

Chorus

Suddenly they’re looming
Their shadows are so black
We can’t stay here but there’s no turning back

Snow is on the high peaks
The journey’s almost done
At the shore we’ll see the last light of the sun

Chorus

As always, tell us what you think. (and I appologise for messing up that list line of the final verse)

Week #5 Please, try, love

October 13th, 2009

So aparently you all think I should blab a little less about these songs, offer up fewer excuses, just let you listen. We aim to please. But I can’t help myself and at least have to tell you that this was a long distance co-write during which Aidan and I sent little bits of recordings back and forth to each other over the ether.

Please, Please keep an open mind
Please, Please recognize that hearts exist in many different kinds

We are all the same
We know love and hate
We have the power to choose
Which side to take

Try, Try seeing other sides
Try, Try walking in the shoes of those who struggle to feel pride

Chorus

Love, Love in spite of fear
Love, Love until the lines that come between us disappear

Chorus

Week 4: First Two-Wheeler

October 6th, 2009

Not all good ideas make good songs, at least not yet. Its only a couple days old, but this song is really short, kind of trite, not very creative. UGH.
We don’t have kids. I don’t know how parents do it. We witnessed this scene in our neighborhood and suffered emotional whiplash as uninvolved bystanders. There was a girl on a bike, Dad holding on to the back running beside her. He let go. She makes her first solo ride, no training wheels. Dad is visibly proud. Then his expression changes, he starts to run. We turn around suspecting she has fallen. Nope. She’s fine, still riding, getting further away.

Don’t be frightened but I’m gonna let go
Don’t think about falling just let it roll
Keep pedaling steady keep your eyes straight ahead
You’ll be surprised how far you’ll go

Now the world’s wide open and before you know
You’re riding twice as far as a week ago
Once you taste freedom once you feel
You can‘t wait to see how far you can go

On a dime I turned from pride to fear
And I tried not to surrender
But the only way to keep you near
Is to let you ride forever

I’m a little bit frightened please take it slow
I never really though about how far you’d go
You keep pedaling steady keep your eyes straight ahead
I’ll try to remember I’m the one who let go

Go ahead, unleash your inner music critic.

Song 3: Desdemona Weeps

September 29th, 2009

Week number three of “A Song A Week”! We are still writing a song every week and recording it very crudely in our living room.

This week was odd. We didn’t really have a lot of time to spend together. Typically, neither of us writes on our own. Its something we do together. My strength is words and Aidan’s is music. But this week, we were struggling individually. When we finally got together, I had words and Aidan had music. And they worked together. Really kind of perfectly, with neither of us having to make many changes. Tell us what you think… use the view comment button at the bottom of the page.

Desdemona weeps
The car slams to a halt
She beats her fists against the dash
As if somehow its her fault
That the damn thing’s overheating
Well, it just does that now and then
She lets it cool down for a moment
And tries to start again

Its never left her stranded
On some dark stretch of road
She knows they’ve traveled way too far
But she’s tired of being told
That she’s still living in the past
Its no longer if but when
She shuts her eyes and says a prayer
And tries to start again

Some things were built for speed
And some were built to last
Lasting love was never guaranteed
But did it have to burn so fast

She’s standing at the station
While they figure out the cost
The price of labor’s getting high
And there’s all that time she’s lost
But every mile is a memory
All the places that she‘s been
She smiles as she remembers
And tries to start again

Song 2: Dead Reckoning

September 22nd, 2009

If you are just tuning in, here’s the scoop. We’re writing and recording one song every week. And when I say “recording” I mean one mic in the living room, no EQ, effects, mixing…really rough.

Dead Reckoning

A while ago I had an interest in the number seven, why it appears so often in religion, mythology, etc. And I was thinking about how fear holds us back. I wrote the first two lines and lost interest. Finally worked it through, deadlines are a good thing I guess.

Seven sins, seven years
Careful don’t break the glass
New life begins when we face our fears
Dark days will surely pass

When the winds blow
You won’t get lost, let go
You will find home
Dead reckoning

See the wonders of the world
Unlock their mysteries
In foreign suns your sand makes pearls
Every moment sets you free

Chorus

All your fears and all your superstitions
So much time you waste on endless repetition
Of familiar things that only serve to keep you down
Weigh the anchors on your ship of discovery
Cast off the comforts of the ordinary
Take seven steps and turn around

Sail the oceans east to west
Feel the water on your skin
The laws of motion have you possessed
The sirens draws you in

Chorus

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!

Song 1: Wide Open Spaces

September 15th, 2009

We took a short vacation on the north fork of Long Island and started talking about vacations we took when we were kids. Some how that led to this:

We drove south a couple hours, highway 1 in July showers
Northern California fading slowly
A country bar every country mile, we could be out here a while
These kind of places used to scare me
’till I saw knowing glances on unfamiliar faces
In these wide open spaces

Ocean air fills up my lungs, cool green grass and white hot sun
Let the crashing waves hypnotize me
Sunny days bring sunny smiles, running barefoot like a child
Laughing when the shifting tides surprise me
In a million years I never thought I’d find my saving graces
In these wide open spaces

Forty years and a million miles
I’ve grown so far from that simple child
Who built sand castles just to watch them fall
Or maybe I haven’t grown at all

I stood here before I knew you, they shot a rocket to the moon
Back then anything could happen
Endless summer turned endless years, toook me far away from here
Reaching for the stars gave way to reason
But I found the sense of wonder that I had lost for ages
In these wide open spaces

A song a week, every week

September 14th, 2009

We’ve had a little trouble writing, actually finishing, songs. I am in my normal state of angst and fear that we will never, ever, record another CD. So, I decided that we should commit to writing one song every week. A real song. A completely finished song. Not necessarily a good song. Hopefully some good songs.
Aidan was hesitant. I reminded him that a couple of years ago I was unhappy with my pie making skills and committed to baking a pie a week. He was completely into that. He reminded me that all he had to do then was eat pie. I persisted, nagged, coerced, won.
Then I suggested that, just to keep us honest, we post our songs each week. Much more nagging and coersion followed. Much more.
But we’ve both agreed; A Song a Week. And we’re sharing them with you, for better or for worse.
Please understand that these songs will be in their infancy. There will be no time to edit lines or improve harmonies. They will be recorded on one microphone in our living room with no mixing, no effects, no EQ, nothing. They will sound as if you walked into our living room while we were rehearsing brand new song.
We’ve written one song, recorded it, now I have to figure out how to post it, hopefully by tommorow or Wednesday. We’d love to hear from you. Tell us what you think of the songs – good or bad. I think this is going to be fun. Really.
