Friction
Farm is Aidan Quinn on guitar and vocals and Christine Stay on
vocals and bass maybe a little harmonica.
The Past The
songwriting duo formed the band Friction Farm to record and
perform their songs. They released their debut CD “Galileo's
Horse” in 1999. And then the party started. The CD garnered
great reviews , the band (now including a drummer and keyboard
player) attracted a well known manager, showcased for major
labels, sold a bunch of Cds, played some great shows. In 2001
they released a second CD “Choose Red for the Sky” to
even better acclaim, sold even more CDs, played bigger, better
shows.
And nothing else happened.
That, of course,
is the best thing that could ever happen. Aidan and Christine
returned to writing songs. With new found confidence in
performing, they felt comfortable playing shows as a duo. And
that's where the songs really began to shine. Audiences could
understand the lyrics, Christine developed more character to her
lead vocals. Aidan, always skilled at harmonies, could really be
heard. The music grew more intricate showcasing Aidan's flat
picking ability. Friction Farm enjoyed some really special
performance oppportunites, opening for folks as disparate as
rockers Bad Company and the uncategorizable Tori Amos; great
Florida festivals like SunFest and the South Florida Folk Fest.
Finally, in 2004 they released “Believe” an ecelectic
mix of eleven songs ranging from the simple beauty of the title
cut, to the twangy alt-country of “Down” to the
stick-in-your-head pop melody of “Gravity”.

The
Present If that first CD had an underlying theme, it was
certainly hope. The opening cut “Believe” the most
direct harbinger of hope and “Washing Machine”
perhaps the least obvious. In between, “Louisianna”
found hope in the amazing capacity of ordinary people, “Sit
At My Table” delivers it in the form of friendship and
“Whole Heart Broken” in the experience of life
itself. And that's what Friction Farm was banking on: hope in the
experience itself. The folk and acoustic community were
welcoming and supportive. The pair opened for Rod MacDonald, The
Kennedy's, Lucy Kaplansky. They won a songwriter competition,
they played great shows, and finally released a second CD “34
degrees, 32 minutes”
The Future There
will be shows... lots shows... because that's the fun stuff!
There will be side trips to unusual roadside shrines and
oddities. And there is a new found excitement for writing in
the Song of the Week Project and in Cooking on the Road with
Friction Farm, a cookbook in progress.
If the past is any prediction of
the future, stay tuned, good things are bound to be around the
next curve.
